OTTE Executive Briefing: Recognising Competency "well received"
At the request of Patricia Neden, Deputy Secretary, Office of Training and Tertiary Education, Brian Spencer presented the Recognising Competency model to the senior executive officers of the OTTE (Oct 25th). The model was well received with several general managers commenting on the fresh approach the Recognising Competency model brings to an issue which has become bogged down in practice and systemically. The presentation was followed by a discussion of some key issues and ways forward for RPL. Advice from OTTE is that some additional presentations may be requested for other staff.
Food Production Assessors Network

Lynne Stockdale and Wendy Davies facilitated a discussion and workshop at the Hawthorn Campus of Melbourne University. Hume Region Council of ACFE
A large turnout of assessors and trainers from across the Hume Region came to "The Centre", at Benalla (Oct 20th) to hear the Recognising Competency model and participate in a workshop building on the key themes of the Model. Michelle Rogers, ACET facilitated the workshop which featured participation by a cross section of industry, TAFE and ACFE providers. Many speaking invitations now are being generated by word-of-mouth, with several participants having heard the presentation elsewhere and wanting to spread the model within their own local networks.

The Network was joined by trainers from other faculties who took the opportunity to hear the presentation.
Dr John Mitchell: Recognising Competency reviewed in Campus Review
Recognising Competency has been reviewed by John Mitchell in his regular Inside VET column in Campus Review (13 Sept 06). John has been a great supporter of the Recognising Competency model since Brian Spencer featured as a keynote speaker in the RPL Done Well forums conducted by Reframing the Future. (view article)
Recognising Competency model features at VET Pedagogy Symposium.
The Recognising Competency model featured in the VET Pedagogy Symposium conducted by the Victorian TAFE Development Centre in Melbourne (13-14th September 06). The 2 day symposium provided TAFE teachers with an opportunity to learn, share and discus new approaches to teaching and learning. One of the surprises to emerge from the presentation was to hear from one of the participants who had been given a copy of the model from a presentation made 2 years ago. Without any specific professional development in the use of the model, the assessor had implemented it with considerable success! She appreciated having a better briefing on the model and seeing the developments made since those early days. While this shows how easy the model is to apply, we do recommend that assessors are properly trained in the use of the model. (see Products and Services)

Recognising Competency in Children’s Services
The Recognising Competency model is currently training Registered Training Organisations and workplace assessors to use of the Recognising Competency (RC) model. This model streamlines recognition assessment processes for existing workers.
The project has trained approximately 60 assessors in the use of the Recognising Competency model to provide existing workers the opportunity to gain the Diploma in Children’s Services through the recognition of existing skills and provision of gap training. Funding for the project and gap training was provided by the Department of Human Services and training will also be assisted by accessing existing worker traineeships in regional areas. This project uses the recognition of competency as an accelerated pathway to a qualification.
Assessor training workshops were held across Victoria with participants receiving assessment materials on how to apply the RC Model to existing workers against the Certificate III in Children’s Services and the Diploma in Children’s Services
This project also provided an excellent opportunity for professional development of training staff within Registered Training Organisations and organisations who have trained workplace assessors.
